Time has slipped by again and here we are with only a few weeks until Christmas! What a year it’s been. We’ve had to cancel our Winter Ball which would have taken place last week, it’s now going to be on the 4th December 2021 which we’re sure will be here in no time.
We’re taking part in some markets this year, asking people to light a candle of remembrance for all the lives lost to domestic violence in 2020; we hope it’ll raise awareness for what a serious issue this is in society.
Our Avivia Community Fund Crowdfunder campaign has smashed it’s orginal target of £1,750 and now we’re trying to reach £3,250. Every hour of counselling for children who have been through abuse costs around £30, so the more we raise the more children we can help and the longer we can help them. Find out more and donate here: https://www.avivacommunityfund.co.uk/lwacharity
As summer fades away and autumn kicks in we’re really starting to really look forward to our Winter Ball on the 28th November! We’ve had some concerns about paying full price for the tickets now with so much uncertainty about coronavirus, so we’ve launched a deposit scheme! You can find out more on our events page: http://www.lwa.org.uk/fundraising-and-support/events/
With schools going back children who have been living in abusive households finally get an escape – we’ve launched The September Pledge where we’re asking people to share our post and make a donation to support those children in need – check out our social media if you want to get involved (@lwacharity – Insta, Twitter, FB)
The UAVA helpline has been innundated with calls, with 630 recieved in just 4 weeks. We’re working hard to help everyone that we can. We are now doing covid safe face-to-face sessions again which is great for us and our Service Users.
In good news – a Loughborough-based mother and daughter duo have launched a new natural skincare brand and they are donating a % of their profits to LWA! We are so grateful to them for supporting us! You can find out more about them here: https://essentialembrace20.wixsite.com/website-2?fbclid=IwAR3LAwGr56rCinyM–kDXSr8PHWC9xs8Uqr-G0bXH7GKpCNObAFI-CfzfFc. Read their story about why they are supporting LWA by clicking here: Essential Embrace.pdf
We had our Virtual Loughborough Half Marathon over August, thank you to everyone who took part! A big congratulations to Chrissie who was the fastest person to complete the 13.1 miles.
More good news – the Rotary Club of Loughborough have made a donation to us from their Benevolent Fund which members have been donating what would have been their event fee into for the last few months! Thank you for choosing us for your donation. Morrisons in Loughborough also had a donation bucket out for LWA, so thank you to everyone who put coins into that as you finished your shopping!
It’s been a few months since we’ve had an update on what’s going on here at LWA!
One great thing is that we’ve started holding our Freedom Programme in-person again, it’s great to be able to really interact with everyone who has signed up.
Apart from that we’ve been keeping up with an informative series of posts on social media, we have Facebook, Instagram and Twitter so you can follow us on all those platforms – just seach lwacharity and you’ll find us!
We’re really getting underway with planning our Charity Ball which will take place on the 28th November, the perfect way to kick off your festive season and celebrate the end of a crazy year! You can find out more about it here: http://www.lwa.org.uk/fundraising-and-support/events/
We’ve officially postponed the 2020 Loughborough Half Marathon and Coalville Colour Run, we’re looking forward to bringing them back in 2021!
With shops reopening from the 15th June, we want to make sure that anyone affected by domestic abuse or sexual violence knows about Living Without Abuse, and has our contact details. We’ve created a printable poster to put in shop windows or noticeboards: LWA Poster.pdf
We’ve been sent this Survivor’s story, Joanna Brown was abused by her ex-partner and wants to share her story to give hope to other abuse victims.
Download it here: Survivors Story.pdf
Well it certainly has been an interesting time at LWA during the last couple of months! With the lockdown continuing on we’ve been putting a lot of effort into our social media and online challenges – we’ve had a great response so thank you!
Other positive news – a 12 year old boy called Alfie has done a 2.6 mile bike ride for us and raised an amazing £1,500! He did the ride in memory of his Aunty Nicola who tragically lost her life due to domestic ause in 2018. Alfie was on BBC Radio Leicester and front page of the Loughborough Echo, he really did everyone proud!
The Inner Wheel Loughborough has chosen us as their charity to support this year which is great, we look forward to working with them for the next year! Also the Loughborough Round Table chose us as one of their charities to donate £260 to and offered their services as event volunteers. Thank you to both groups!
We launched a monthly newsletter last month too, keeping our supporters and followers up to date with what we’re up to!
Onto the bad news, domestic abuse reports, calls to helplines and website visits has increased during the time of the lockdown, with victims locked in with their abusers. We’ve actually noticed a drop in calls, but believe it’s because people can’t find a time away from their abuser to ring for help – we are making sure that we’re there for everyone that needs us.
Phew, it’s been a busy few months here at LWA and it’s only going to get busier in the run up to the Loughborough Half Marathon! With only a couple of weeks today we’re really pushing the remaining few places and also the brand new Under 16’s Fun Run! Did you know the Team Relay is only £50 now too?!
We’re so grateful for our sponsors – Motorline Direct, We Love Surveys, Reach Business Consulting and Energie Fitness, and all those people that offer time and services for free too. We’re still on the look out for more volunteers if you’re interested in being a part of the event but don’t fancy running!
In other news, we’ve secured the date for the Loughborough and Coalville Colour Runs (5th July, 20th Sept). The Loughborough one will have an added level of fun with some inflatable obstacles too! We’re also looking for people to do the Leicester to Skegness Bike Ride and the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge this year – contact email@example.com if you’re interested!
We’ve had some great fundraising events run for us too – including the Inner Wheel who are holding a Fashion Show on the 4th March! The Kelso Club in Loughborough are also holding a club night for International Women’s Day on the 8th March.
As the Winter months slip into Spring, we’re excited about what’s to come here at LWA!
We’ve now got a system in place where donors can text to donate to LWA! It’s quick and easy to make a one off donation.
To make a donation, text ‘LWA 5’ to 70085 to donate £5. This costs £5 plus a std rate msg. Alternatively, you can opt to give any whole amount from £1 up to £20.
We also have some new events in the pipe line…. keep an eye on our take part pages and on our social media!
We started 2020 off with a real bang! On the 2nd January we had a radio interview on BBC Radio Leicester with Ben Jackson – it was a real pleasure to chat to him about the Loughborough Half Marathon and all the work that LWA does!
The link is here if you would like to listen, we’re 15 minutes in: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p07xkbq8
There is now a generic fundraising email address if you want to speak to someone in the fundraising team about an event, or if you are thinking of doing something yourself to fundraise! firstname.lastname@example.org
The hunt for sponsors, volunteers and runners for the Loughborough Half Marathon continues, we’re starting to really build up numbers now so that’s great! If you’re interested in running then check out the website to sign up: http://www.lwa.org.uk/events/loughborough-half.asp , for sponsorship and volunteers email email@example.com.
Welcome Holly and Verity
The new Fundraising and Event Coordinators have been hired to increase the fundraising at LWA, both in the events we arrange such as the Loughborough Half Marathon, and also the external events. Holly will focus more on our numerous sports-based events, whilst Verity will focus on the others such as the Halloween Ball. We’re really looking forward to seeing what these two can do!
Holly: I’m looking forward to getting started organising some fantastic events with LWA, a fantastic charity that does great work across the County. I have lived in Leicestershire my whole life, and most of that in Queniborough. I have twin daughters, Millie and Darcy who are 10, and a dog called George!
I join LWA after 19 years working for Leicester City Council’s Sports Services department. I started as a Lifeguard in 2000, moved into the fitness team in 2002 and after graduating in 2003 I secured a post as Sports Regeneration Officer, it is during this time I have had experience organising many sporting events such as the London 2012 Olympic Torch relay, The Commonwealth Baton Relay, Sports Awards evenings, Sports Festivals and many more. In 2017 I began working as a Business Development Officer for Sports Services at LCC, where I have had experience of working in Marketing and communications.
Verity: I’m really excited to get fundraising at LWA, it’s a charity that does such important work and I’m looking forward to playing my part in helping all the people affected by domestic abuse. I used to live down in London but have recently returned back ‘up north’ (as the Londoners say, we all know we’re the Midlands!) after a 6-month solo travel adventure around South America. I’ve worked in Event Management for over 5 years, I have experience in organising large scale dinners, conferences and parades. I’m looking forward to putting together a great calendar of events for the LWA!

Ashby Masonic Lodge says NO to Domestic Abuse
Freemasonry (under the United Grand Lodge of England) is one
of the few ‘Men-Only’ organisations left in the world, and Hastings Lodge based
in Ashby de la Zouch nominated Living Without Abuse as one of its Charities.
Earlier this month the Master of the Lodge presented LWA with a cheque for £250
at the bandstand of the Carillion in Loughborough.
The reigning Worshipful Master of the Lodge Mark Stretton
said: “We wanted to choose a local Charity that can really make a positive
difference to families living in and around the Ashby area and the members of
Hastings Lodge wanted to help in a small way to make a stand against Domestic
Abuse. Many people don’t know about the amount of Charity work that Masonic
Lodges do for their communities”
LWA used to be called Loughborough Women’s Aid, and provides
valuable confidential support to women and men who are suffering from any kind
of domestic abuse in North West Leicestershire.
Michele from LWA said: “This money will be used to help pay
the removal costs of local women moving into their new homes. We use a very
good man with a van to do this for us, so the money will also help us to keep a
self-employed man in business too.
This donation will enable four women to start brand new
lives and although LWA receives grant funding for their support services,
paying for this kind of practical assistance is not included in their funding
so a very big thank you to Hastings
LWA is always happy to receive donations from local
organisations, and you can contact them here: http://www.lwa.org.uk/contact-lwa/

9th February 2012
Welcome to our new website! 2011 brought about lots of changes for us here at LWA, not least – and after months of planning – we finally changed our name. After thirty five years of being known as Loughborough Women’s Aid it was no small decision to make the change to Living Without Abuse, but we hope that the new name and the new site better represent who we are and what we do.
We’d love to hear what you think of the site and anything that you think is missing so drop us a line on the contact us page.
