Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people are affected in very similar ways to heterosexual people. However, they face that added fear of being ‘outed’ if they report the abuse.

The perpetrator can threaten to ‘out’ the victim to their family, friends or at work, as a means of controlling them. LGBT people may fear that they won’t be believed or that they will be judged because of their sexuality. It can also be more difficult to identify the perpetrator in a same sex relationship. All of these issues make it more complicated for LGBT people to report the abuse.

If you are experiencing domestic abuse please see our GET HELP NOW section or visit the Galop website.

If you are worried you are abusing someone please see our ADVICE FOR PERPETRATORS section.
